Questions Surround Ellison Investigation as DFL Ignores Request for Update

Keith Ellison

It’s been one month since Minnesota attorney general candidate Keith Ellison was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-girlfriend, but the Democratic Party still has no updates on its review of the matter.

On August 11, Austin Monahan, the son of Ellison’s ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan, wrote that he had seen a “video” that “showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her” numerous obscenities. His mother later confirmed the allegations, prompting the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to announce that it was “reviewing” the claims.

But just one day later, DNC Chairman Tom Perez passed the buck to the state Democratic Party (formally known as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party), saying he believes the DFL “is conducting a very thorough investigation and a very prompt investigation.”

Earlier that day (Aug. 15), Perez was recorded by a Republican tracker, who filmed the chairman running away from questions about the investigation.

The Minnesota Sun reached out to the DFL for an update on the status of its investigation, but it ignored the request.

In a Sunday interview with Fox 9 Morning News, Ellison himself seemed unable to offer any updates on the investigation.

“All I know is that I’m complying fully, and I think it’s very important to do so, and I stand by the process,” he responded.

While the DFL has yet to issue any formal statement on its investigation, it did offer its full endorsement of Ellison just four days after the accusations surfaced.

“Today, members of the DFL State Central Committee endorsed Congressman Keith Ellison for Minnesota attorney general,” DFL Chairman Ken Martin said. “As attorney general, Keith will be a champion for families and fight to hold powerful interests accountable. With Ellison in place as the People’s Lawyer, voters can trust that their best interest will be priority number one.”
