Trump to Withdraw U.S. from U.N. Human Rights Council, End Funding for Gaza Aid Agency

President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw the United States from the United Nations’ Human Rights Council on Tuesday and end all US funding for the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which supplies aid to Gaza.

The executive order, which would reinstates policies from Trump’s first presidential administration, is expected to occur the same day that Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington D.C., according to Politico.

Trump and Netanyahu will be a holding a joint news conference at the White House on Tuesday, Trump’s first joint news conference with a foreign leader in his new term, according to CBS News.

The Biden administration previously paused funding for UNRWA last year, over concerns that staffers had participated in Hamas’ attack on Israel. The U.S. has also accused the council of being biased against Israel.

The Trump administration is expected to accuse the council of not doing its job in condemning countries who have committed human rights violations, and condemn its alleged bias against Israel.

“The UNHRC has demonstrated consistent bias against Israel, focusing on it unfairly and disproportionately in council proceedings,” a White House fact sheet shared with Politico said. “In 2018, the year President Trump withdrew from the UNHRC in his first administration, the organization passed more resolutions condemning Israel than Syria, Iran, and North Korea combined.”

The order will also direct Secretary of State Marco Rubio to review which international organizations, conventions, or treaties “promote radical or anti-American sentiment,” and report it to the White House.

Trump is also expected to shut down or heavily reform the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) office, which delivers billions of dollars in humanitarian aid overseas.
