Progressive firebrand and Democratic lawmaker, Representative Cori Bush (D-MO-01) tweeted on Sunday that the only people who should celebrate Independence Day are “white people.”
“When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free,” her full tweet read.

Bush’s claim that Black people “still aren’t free” seemingly ignores the fact that she currently is an elected official that represents more than 700,000 people. Further, she is paid a $175,000 taxpayer-funded salary.
The Missouri Democrat rose to power backed by the far-left activist group Justice Democrats — who supported other progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05). The group is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee and works to increase the number of leftist figures in Congress — including endorsing a primary challenge of Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN-05) from Odessa Kelly.
Bush was not the only far-left figure to express their disdain for Independence Day and to disparage the founding of the United States.
A California congressional candidate replied to Bush’s tweet, agreeing with her rhetoric.
“It’s almost as if our entire country has been brainwashed to ignore our history—and how its worst elements continue today—despite our self-congratulatory rhetoric,” added Shahid Buttar.
However, many officials pushed back on the claims offered by Bush and Buttar.
“Hateful, divisive lies. The Left hates America. Believe them when they tell you this. Two years ago, Colin Kaepernick tried to spread the same lies on July 4. I responded with the wisdom of the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass,” Senator Ted Cruz said in a tweet with a link to a video of his response to Kaepernick.

“I’m a 40-year-old American descendent of slaves. The year is 2021, and I have been “free” my entire life,” added cultural critic Thomas Chatterton Williams.
