Twelve Virginia hospitals have been named to Healthgrades’ list of the top 250 hospitals in the U.S., a ranking based on patient outcomes. Henrico Doctors’ Hospital and several of its campuses and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital made it onto Healthgrades’ top 100 list. No Virginia hospitals made it onto the top 50 list.
“Now more than ever, patients are learning the importance of taking control of their health and using resources like Healthgrades to find the perfect hospital and caregiver match,” Healthgrades Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science Brad Bowman, MD said in an HCA Health Systems press release.
Healthgrades features a database of individual hospitals that consumers can use featuring safety ratings and reviews by patients, and a page listing all Virginia hospitals named in the top 250.
The top 250 list recognizes the top five percent of hospitals in the U.S. Healthgrades says the list is based on patient outcome data from recent Medicare claims records, patient survey data through Medicare and Medicaid, and from all-payer data in some states including Virginia. It evaluates potential patient outcomes based on risk factors and creates a predicted outcome rate for all patients, and then statistically compares the actual results with the prediction.
“The Healthgrades America’s Best Hospitals achievements are based on an objective review of clinical outcomes across multiple conditions and procedures, analyzing the performance of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide. America’s Best Hospitals deliver better outcomes than 95 percent of hospitals in the nation,” a Healthgrades infographic states.
Two Richmond-area hospitals, Chippenham Hospital and Henrico Doctor’s Hospital, ranked in the top 50 list for best surgical care. Both are operated by HCA Health Systems.
“These recognitions are a testament to our hospitals’ commitment to patient safety,” HCA Capital Division vice president of quality Elizabeth Mikula, R.N. said in the release. “Our patient care teams are to be commended for this outstanding achievement and dedication to providing highest quality care for our patients and their families every day.”
In 2021, Virginia ranked number one for hospital safety in the U.S. in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

These new Healthgrades rankings are further confirmation that Virginia hospitals are a true asset to the Commonwealth.”
