Mike Johnson appears to have come up short in his bid to remain Speaker of the House, with several Republicans voting for other candidates and no one securing a majority.
Johnson took 216 votes to Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s 215. Three other lawmakers cast votes for someone else and none voted present. The vote remains open and lawmakers are on the House floor.
Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., voted for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, while Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., cast a vote for Republican Whip Tom Emmer. Rep. Keith Self, R-Pa., cast his vote for Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla.
The House of Representatives on Friday convened for its first day of the 119th Congress.
