Buffalo Bills cornerback Damar Hamlin has been released from the hospital following his sudden collapse during last Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
“Mr. Hamlin has been released and returned to Buffalo. I traveled with him to the airport this morning with our UC Health air care and mobile care crew, including teammates who were with us on the field when Mr. Hamlin collapsed,” confirmed professor of emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and director of the Emergency Medicine MLP Program.
During the game, Hamlin tackled the Bengals’ Tee Higgins and initially appeared fine, but quickly fell to the ground and suffered a cardiac arrest. He was subsequently hospitalized and has gradually recovered.
The National Football League suspended play of the game and later opted against rescheduling it entirely so as not to delay the playoffs.
“This has been a very difficult week,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said when announcing the decision. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country. We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”
The Bills triumphed over the New England Patriots on Sunday by a score of 35-23. Hamlin did not participate.
