A survey of Wyoming voters by a national consulting group shows Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) hemorrhaging support after voting to impeach former president Donald J. Trump.
“Liz Cheney’s decision to vote to impeach President Trump makes her extremely vulnerable according to a Wyoming poll conducted among 500 likely general election voters,” a memo from McLaughlin & Associates said. “It is evident her ratings are in bad shape among general election voters and have collapsed among Republicans and Trump voters. The strong voter sentiment in this survey suggests there could be similar results for other Republicans who voted for impeachment.”
Among the notable points were the following:
-
- 70 percent of Wyoming voters surveyed believe the impeachment trial against Trump is unconstitutional
- 69 percent of those voters disapprove of Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump
- 85 percent of Wyoming Republicans disapprove of Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump
- 96 percent of Trump supporters in Wyoming disapprove of Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump
- 63 percent of Wyoming voters surveyed said they were less likely to vote for Cheney because of her impeachment vote
- 77 percent of Wyoming Republicans and 86 percent of Wyoming Trump supports said they were less likely to support Cheney because of her impeachment vote
- 62 percent of Wyoming voters view Cheney unfavorably
- 73 percent of Wyoming Republicans and 80 percent of Wyoming Trump supporters view her unfavorably
- 70 percent of Wyoming voters have a favorable view of Trump
- 85 percent of Wyoming Republicans have a favorable view of Trump, and 96 percent of Wyoming Trump supporters have a favorable view of Trump
“It is clear, Wyoming voters are going to hold Cheney accountable on the ballot,” the memo said. “Only 13% of general election voters would vote to re-elect Cheney. Her re-elect score drops to 10% among Republicans and 6% among Trump voters.”
The survey also noted that state Sen. Anthony Bouchard (R-District 6), who has declared his candidacy against Cheney, leads her 54 percent to 21 percent in head to head matchup.
The Tennessee Star recently interviewed Bouchard, who is a businessman and the founder of Wyoming Gun Owners.
“Before she entered into Wyoming politics, Liz Cheney founded and led a group called ‘Keep America Safe,’ an organization that peddled deep state misinformation,” he told The Star. “I never supported her, nor did I vote for her.”
Bouchard said he was “not surprised” by Cheney’s support for Trump’s impeachment.
“She has shown disdain for the president since Day One,” he said. “A lot of that is because of his policy of ending the failed Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama globalist foreign policy. Her failed globalist foreign policy led to endless wars and the deaths of countless numbers of Americans.”
Bouchard’s background as a grassroots organizer and Wyoming lawmaker will likely help him in his bid to unseat Cheney.
“What I learned early on is how leadership in both chambers has full control over the process. Then, I learned how grass roots pressure changes their game,” he said. “This is why I was so successful in changing pro-gun policy in Wyoming.”
Cheney is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney (R). She has served as Wyoming’s only member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017.
