Glenn Youngkin and Terry McAuliffe have already raised a combined $40 million, according to new finance data, through June, reported by the Virginia Public Access Project. A VPAP graphic shows that previous years through 2001, previous fundraising through June never reached $20 million. The June period is the first reporting period after the parties nominated their candidates.
Due to $12 million in personal loans, Youngkin out-raised McAuliffe in the January-through-May period. But McAuliffe’s June fundraising beat Youngkin. McAuliffe raised about $7.5 million in June, while Youngkin raised about $3.6 million.
The Democratic Governors Association gave McAuliffe $2 million, and several other unions provided donations of more than $100,000.
The Republican Governors Association gave Youngkin $500,000, with large donations coming from East Coast general contractor the W.M. Jordan Company and individuals like Paul Manning. But Youngkin’s numbers stand out more by what’s not there.
“Biggest takeaway from this is that Youngkin didn’t loan his campaign any money in June and is getting outraised heavily by McAuliffe,” Virginia elections pundit Chaz Nuttycombe told The Virginia Star.
Attorney General Mark Herring, running for reelection, raised $462,001 in June, while his opponent Delegate Jason Miyares (R-Virginia Beach) raised $486,070, according to VPAP data. GOP candidate for Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears raised $232,392 in June, while her opponent, Delegate Hala Ayala (D-Prince William) raised $512,896.
Another Poll
On Friday, conservative think tank, the American Principles Project, and SPRY Strategies released a poll showing McAuliffe at 46 percent, while Youngkin got 41 percent, just outside the four-percent margin of error. The poll was conducted from July 6 through July 9 among 600 likely voters.
APP President Terry Schilling said in a statement, “Republicans should be cautiously excited. Despite Democrats’ recent dominance in the state, Glenn Youngkin looks to be very competitive, thanks to widespread disapproval with the radical left-wing agenda being pushed by President Biden on down.”
Nuttycombe tweeted, “McAuliffe up 5 in a new R-aligned poll. His best yet. We now have 4 polls confirming that McAuliffe has a slight/moderate lead right now.”

Republicans need to jump into the CRT fight in Nova and election integrity reform in the entire state. Those two issues are hot button topics that should swing the moderate voters on the one hand and the more conservative voters on the other.
